Taekwondo Blocks

Basic Blocks


1. Lower Block - Arai Makki

  • Blocking hand in fist, palm up on opposite shoulder; non-blocking hand in fist straight ahead in 45 degree angle.

  • Block runs down other arm and twists at the end into forward fist; blocks just past groin area with arms slightly bent to avoid damaging the elbow.

  • Non-blocking hand snaps back to hip, palm up in fist.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.

2. Body Block - Momtong Makki

  • Raise blocking arms to shoulder hight 90 degrees from body in a relaxed position at a 45 degree angle of the elbow; hand in fist facing outwards; wrist straight.

  • Non-blocking arm straight out in body punch position.

  • Swing blocking arm around in 45 degree position to in front of body, at shoulder height; wrist snaps around powerfully at the end to face back towards your body.

  • Non-blocking arms snaps back to hip, palm up in fist.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.

3. Upper block - Olgul Makki

  • Blocking hand palm up across waist towards opposite hit/belt.

  • Non-blocking hand resting in front of opposite shoulder, fist inwards.

  • Raise blocking hand until it is slightly above your forehead, one whole fist away from your head. This is top stop high attacks hitting your head with enough room to push the attack away.

  • Non-blocking arms snaps back to hip, palm up in fist.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.

4. Outside Block - Bagkat Makki




  • Blocking hand palm inwards on opposite front hip/belt.

  • Non-blocking hand resting in front of opposite shoulder, fist inwards (same as Olgul Makki).

  • Rotate blocking hand in an arc, counter-clockwise to opposite shoulder, shoulder height (don't go past the shoulder) at 45 degree angle.

  • Pull non-blocking hand back to hip, palm up in fist.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.

5. Minor Outside Block - An Palmok Bagkat Makki


  • Similiar to Bagkat Makki

  • Blocking hand palm inwards on opposite front hip/belt.

  • Non-blocking hand resting in front of opposite shoulder, fist inwards (same as Olgul Makki).

  • Rotate blocking hand in an arc, counter-clockwise to opposite shoulder, shoulder height (don't go past the shoulder) at 45 degree angle.

  • Twist wrist around at the last second to face the opposite way. Just like if you were holding a bucket with a monkey in it!

  • Pull non-blocking hand back to hip, palm up in fist.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.


Advanced Blocks


1. Knife-hand Outside Block

  • Blocking hand flat like a blade, finders tight together, thumb tucked into palm.

  • Blocking hand starts on opposite hip like you are about to draw a sword.

  • Block arcs up past your shoulder, then your nose, and flicks out, shoulder height, 120 degree angle.

  • Non-blocking hand starts in fist on opposite shoulder, wips back to the hip, palm up.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.

2. Double knife-hand Outside Block

  • One blocking hand shoulder height, arm outstreached but still bent, away from the body, head facing opposite direction.

  • Opposite blocking hand in sword position on opposite hip.

  • At the same time the blocking hand both block:

    • First hand wips around and knife blocks under solar plexus, wrist in centre of body, palm up straght/flat to ground, not quite toucning the body;

    • Second hand performs a single knife-jand outside block.

  • Slight twist of hips as blocking to gather more power.

  • Exhale outwards with kihap at end.
